Breathing is important for two reasons. It is the only means to supply our bodies and its various organs with the supply of oxygen which is vital for our survival. The second function of breathing is that it is one means to get rid of waste products and toxins from the body.
Why Oxygen is so vital
Oxygen is the most vital nutrient for our bodies. It is essential for the integrity of the brain, nerves, glands and internal organs. We can do without food for weeks and without water for days, but without oxygen, we will die within a few minutes. If the brain does not get proper supply of this essential nutrient, it will result in the degradation of all vital organs in the body.
The brain requires more oxygen than any other organ. If it doesn't get enough, the result is mental sluggishness, negative thoughts and depression and, eventually, vision and hearing decline. Old people and those whose arteries are clogged often become senile and vague because oxygen to the brain is reduced. They get irritated very quickly.
Poor oxygen supply affects all parts of the body. The oxygen supply is reduced to all parts of the body as we get older due to poor lifestyle. Many people need reading glasses and suffer hearing decline in old age.
When an acute circulation blockage deprives the heart of oxygen, a heart attack is the result. If this occurs to the brain, the result is a stroke.
For a long time, lack of oxygen has been considered a major cause of cancer. Even as far back as 1947, work done in Germany showed that when oxygen was withdrawn, normal body cells could turn into cancer cells.
Similar research has been done with heart disease. It showed that lack of oxygen is a major cause of heart disease, stroke and cancer. The work done at Baylor University in the USA has shown that you can reverse arterial disease in monkeys by infusing oxygen into the diseased arteries.
Thus, oxygen is very critical to our well-being, and any effort to increase the supply of oxygen to our body and especially to the brain will pay rich dividends. Deep diaphragmatic breathing is particularly important for people who have sedentary jobs and spend most of the day in offices. Their brains are oxygen starved and their bodies are just ‘getting by’. They feel tired, nervous and irritable and are not very productive. On top of that, they sleep badly at night, so they get a bad start to the next day continuing the cycle. This situation also lowers their immune system, making them susceptible to catching colds, flu and other ‘bugs’.
Oxygen Purifies the Blood Stream
One of the major secrets of vitality and rejuvenation is a purified blood stream. The quickest and most effective way to purify the blood stream is by taking in extra supplies of oxygen from the air we breathe. By learning how to deep breathe exercises is the most effective way to saturate the blood with extra oxygen.
Oxygen bums up the waste products (toxins) in the body, as well as recharging the body's batteries (the solar plexus). In fact, most of our energy requirements come not from food but from the air we breathe.
By purifying the blood stream, every part of the body benefits, as well as the mind. Your complexion will become clearer and brighter and wrinkles will begin to fade away. In short, rejuvenation will start to occur.
Medical Science Verifies Oxygen's Importance
Scientists have discovered that the chemical basis of energy production in the body is a chemical called Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). If something goes wrong with the production of ATP, the result is lowered vitality, disease and premature ageing.
Scientists have also discovered that oxygen is critical for the production of ATP; in fact, it is its most vital component.
Deep diaphragmatic breathing permits us to tap into this vital nutrient.
Importance of healthy breathing
We know how to breathe. It is something that occurs to us automatically, spontaneously, naturally. We are breathing even when we are not aware of it. So it seems foolish to think that one can be told how to breathe. Yet, one's breathing becomes modified and restricted in various ways, not just momentarily, but habitually. We develop unhealthy habits without being aware of it. We tend to assume a position (slouched positions) that diminishes lung capacities and take shortened breaths. We also live in social conditions that are not good for the health of our respiratory system.
As discussed above, scientists have known for a long time that there exists a strong connection between respiration and mental states. Improper breathing produces diminished mental ability. The corollary is true also. It is known that mental tensions produce restricted breathing.
A normally sedentary person, when confronted with a perplexing problem, tends to lean forward, draw his arms together, and bend his head down. All these body postures results in reduced lung capacity. The more intense the concentration, the more tense the muscles become. The muscles in the arms, neck and chest contract. The muscles that move the thorax and control inhalation and muscular tenseness clamp down and restrict the exhalation. The breaths become shorter and shorter. After an extended period of intense focusing, the whole system seems to be frozen in a certain posture.
We become fatigued from the decreased circulation of the blood and from the decreased availability of oxygen for the blood because we have almost stopped breathing. As our duties, responsibilities and their attendant problems become more demanding; we develop habits of forgetting to breathe.
What's wrong with the way we breathe?
Our breathing is too shallow and too quick. We are not taking in sufficient oxygen and we are not eliminating sufficient carbon dioxide. , As a result, our bodies are oxygen starved, and a toxic build-up occurs. Every cell in the body requires oxygen and our level of vitality is just a product of the health of all the cells.
Shallow breathing does not exercise the lungs enough, so they lose some of their function, causing a further reduction in vitality.
Animals which breathe slowly live the longest; the elephant is a good example.
We need to breathe more slowly and deeply. Quick shallow breathing results in oxygen starvation which leads to reduced vitality, premature ageing, poor immune system and a myriad of other factors.
Why is our breath fast and shallow?
There are several reasons for this. The major reasons are:
As we go through life, these bad breathing habits we picked up become part of our life. Unless we do something to reverse these habits, we can suffer permanent problems. The good news is that these are reversible. The bad news is that before we can change these habits, we should recognize and accept that our behavior needs to be changed. This means that we see for ourselves the benefits of good breathing techniques.
With our 'normal' sedentary way of living, we only use about one tenth of our total lung capacity. This is sufficient to survive and just tick over, but not sufficient for a high vitality level, long life and high resistance to disease.
The Medical Viewpoint on Fast, Shallow Breathing
Modem science agrees with the ancient yogis on the subject of shallow breathing. An editorial in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine suggested that fast, shallow breathing can cause fatigue, sleep disorders, anxiety, stomach upsets, heart bum, gas, muscle cramps, dizziness, visual problems, chest pain and heart palpitations.
Scientists have also found that a lot of people who believe they have heart disease are really suffering from improper breathing.
Benefits of Deep Diaphragmatic Breathing
Deep Diaphragmatic breathing causes an increase in the elasticity of the lungs and rib cage. This creates an increased breathing capacity all day, not just during the actual exercise period. This means all the above benefits also occur all day.

All over the world now, people are catching on to what this element can do. Oxygen therapies are becoming so popular that there are oxygen bars, oxygen creams, oxygen pep-ups and more. That’s because oxygen can help everything from overweight to low energy to poor health.
Does oxygen through deep breathing live up to all these claims and more? You bet it does...I am telling you that you can have a healthier lifestyle, a more powerful immune system and a leaner body...simply by breathing.
By doing only doing 15 minutes of deep breathing every day you will increase the amount of oxygen to the blood, keeping your immune system peaked and your body in a healthy state.
“Oxygen gets rid of toxicity and bacteria, viruses and parasites are destroyed in the presence of oxygen – especially cancer”.
Our bodies experience oxygen starvation on a daily basis. Did you know that the following factors that rob oxygen from our bodies?
Toxic Stress: Whether derived from the water we drink, the air we breathe of the food we eat, we are now subject to over 70,000 different toxic contaminates, many that did not exist a decade ago. Oxygen is required for the body to even attempt to metabolize and eliminate these lethal chemicals from the body.
Emotional Stress: Adrenaline and adrenaline-related hormones are created by the body during emotionally stressful times (like every day for many of us). The body must use its available oxygen to metabolize these chemicals back out of the body to re-establish metabolic balance.
Physical Trauma and Infections: Bacteria and viruses can put tremendous stress on the body's immune system. When this occurs, the immune system is robbed of the oxygen that is necessary for the body's normal metabolic functions.
Reduction in available atmospheric oxygen: Studies reveal that increased environmental pollution and "green plant" destruction has reduced the amount of oxygen (by as much as 50 %!) in our atmosphere over the last 200 years.
Improper diets: Saturated fats can reduce oxygen in the blood stream. Foods with high fat contents and low nutrient values, (i.e. junk and highly processed foods,) have less than half of the oxygen content than complex carbohydrates.
Lack of exercise: Exercising increases the body's metabolic rate as well as the intake of oxygen to help cleanse the body of built-up toxins. A sedentary lifestyle reduces the body's ability to process out toxic contaminates and to perform normal metabolic functions.
Breathing the SlimBody4Life way, will teach you to breathe effectively and is designed to optimise the amount of oxygen available in our body. When combined with the specially designed movements that channel the oxygen to where it is needed the most, your entire being will have access to the oxygen it needs for optimal health.
Sure enough, just as few minutes without oxygen is the beginning of the end, a few minutes with oxygen is the beginning of a new life. The SlimBody4Life Method will provide you with this new beginning.

How does deep breathing help you lose weight? Deep breathing while exercising increases oxygenation of your system, which boosts your metabolism, which in turn helps your body burn fat, because “oxygen burns fat”.
One of the most important things about diaphragmatic breathing is how it stimulates the part of the central nervous system that causes the body to relax; it also boosts the immune system and can rid the body of chronic illnesses.
Deep diaphragmatic breathing stimulates the cleansing of the lymph system by creating a vacuum effect which pulls the lymph through the bloodstream. This increases the rate of toxic elimination by as much as 15 times the normal rate.
The human body is designed to discharge around 70 percent of its toxins through breathing. Only a small percentage of toxins are discharged through sweat, defecation, and urination. If your breathing is not operating at peak efficiency, you are not ridding yourself of toxins properly. If less than 70 percent of your toxins are being released through breathing, other systems of your body, such as your kidneys, must work overtime. This overwork can set the stage for a number of illnesses.... People who need to lose weight don't take in enough oxygen. Someone with a weight problem also has a breathing problem.
It's amazing the impact that proper, complete breathing can have on you, physically, mentally and emotionally. Try it today!

Wouldn’t it be good if all you needed to do is deep breathe and you could reduce your cravings for food you shouldn’t really be eating? Well, you can! I came across this article written Diana Walker, the Cravings Coach and this is what she had to say.
Reducing your cravings for foods you shouldn't eat could be as easy as taking a few deep breaths. Getting enough oxygen in your blood stream is one of the best things that you can do to curb your cravings and burn more fat. Your oxygen levels can have a drastic impact on how your body processes food and how you respond to hunger.
It's a known fact that most people, yourself included, don't breathe deeply enough. We are a nation of shallow breathers and as a result, our bodies are suffering on many levels. Oxygen is vital to the proper functioning of many of the body's systems, including the digestive system. When you don't have enough oxygen, you are significantly impairing your ability to function.
When you up your intake of oxygen through deep breathing exercises, you can achieve greater states of relaxation, which helps reduce your cravings. Cravings often come as a result of an increase of the stress hormone cortisol. When you have increased cortisol levels your body is basically in flight or fight response. It puts all of your necessary systems on hold and puts your body into survival mode. You'll store more fat, in addition to craving more high fat and high calorie foods.
Oxygen is also important for powering your fat burning processes. If you have more oxygen in your blood stream, you'll burn more fat. The more fat you burn the less hungry you'll be and the less you'll succumb to cravings. In addition, you'll lose weight and won't have to eat as much on a daily basis to maintain your weight. This in and of itself can greatly reduce cravings.
Now that you know the benefits of having adequate oxygen in your system, the solution is quite simple. You just need to get more oxygen into your blood stream on a daily basis. The easiest way to do this is with deep breathing exercises.
Deep breathing exercises are simple to learn and very effective. You can start by sitting comfortably in a quiet place and emptying your lungs with an exhalation through your mouth. Then take a deep breath through your nose and fill your lungs to their capacity. You might be surprised by how far you can inhale compared to how much you normally inhale. Most people don't breathe deeply enough on a normal basis.
When you first start using deep breathing, you may notice that you develop a bit of a headache from the increased oxygen intake. You shouldn't take this as a sign to stop. Your body is just getting used to more oxygen. After a few days, you'll find that you feel better after completing the deep breathing exercises. You can also combine deep breathing with light exercise, like yoga or walking. Getting your body moving will help you breathe deeper and will also reduce your need to eat.
Deep breathing exercises will improve the levels of oxygen in your blood, which has a direct effect on your hunger. In just a matter of time you'll be craving less "bad" foods and processing the foods that you do eat more efficiently.

It has been long known that the bottom line in weight loss is burning more calories than you A lack of Oxygen in your body may contribute to the following problems: · Weight Gain · Sexual Dysfunction · Cancer and Disease · Fatigue and Sleep Disorders · Suppression of the Immune System · Circulation Problems · Poor Digestion · Depression · Memory Loss & Poor Concentration · Muscles Aches and Pains · Headaches · Hangovers Oxygen has long been known to help thin the blood, increase circulation and speed up your metabolism, thus burning more calories just by breathing! The human body is sometimes called an "oxygen factory". Oxygen is important because it is the fuel that cells in our body use to function. In essence, it is the "food" for our cells. If there is enough oxygen around our cells, then our organs and tissues have plenty of "food" and most likely will function properly. If our cells are not properly nourished, the message to our brain is “feed us.” If 90% of our energy is derived from oxygen, and the other 10% is derived from food and water, wouldn’t it stand to reason that the more oxygen we take in, the less hungry we would feel? take in eating. Overweight people exercise less causing a slower metabolism and they eat
more than “normal average weight people.” Some people don’t have the time to exercise or the
ability to eat right. Some people eat to live, and others live to eat. Here lies the problem;
overweight people wish there were a simple “cure” for their eating problem and lack of
exercise. There are no magic pills or Genies in a bottle! Dieting is a short-term fix because
DIETS DON’T WORK! You need to make a LIFE change, and it’s going to mean eating less and
becoming more active. What we are offering is a second chance on life, YOUR LIFE! If nothing
else, OXYGEN IS LIFE! The secret to better physical health and losing weight is oxygen!

When it comes to diet and nutrition, there is so much conflicting information staring us in the face on a daily basis. Every magazine has a different diet, a new 'quick and easy' way to achieve the body you have always wanted. Most of us have tried some of them, in fact, many of us may have tried them ALL!! The results are usually the same – we lose weight, but we fall off the wagon when we “finish” the diet and go back to eating “normally”.
Here are some simple tips for fat loss and increasing your energy levels:
Eat more protein. Women in particular, do not eat enough protein. We need to ingest protein consistently throughout the course of a day. Many will start the day with orange juice, a bowl of low fat cereal, skim milk, and fruit, believing this to be a healthy breakfast and good for fat loss. If you are a marathon runner, maybe!! It’s low fat, but it’s full of sugar, and as you will see below, sugar, not fat, is the enemy when it comes to fat loss! Eat more protein – tuna, egg whites, whey protein, chicken, lean beef, cottage cheese etc.
Low fat diets do not work – mainly because the fat that is removed is replaced with sugar.
Sugar is the ENEMY!! Sugar increases our blood sugar levels rapidly, causing the hormone insulin to be released to subsequently lower the blood sugar level again. Increased insulin levels are a pre-cursor for fat storage. This rise and fall in our blood sugar level is also responsible for our energy levels, our cravings and often our moods. We do need carbohydrates for energy, we couldn’t function properly without them, and however, certain forms of carbohydrate are a better choice than others. Choose complex carbohydrates (oats, rice, sweet potatoes) over simple ones (sugar, honey, dried fruit). Some carbohydrates raise our blood sugar faster (high Glycemic Index (GI)) than others (low Glycemic Index), so choose low GI (i.e. sweet potato) over high GI carbohydrates (white potato) where possible.
Eat 5-6 small balanced (protein/carbohydrate) meals, evenly spaced throughout the day. This keeps the metabolism firing and your body burning fat.
Drink at least 3 litres of water every day.
Watch your portion sizes!
If you would like to know more about eating right, check out the book I have written called The Healthy Eating Plan at http://www.slimbody4life.net/program_healthy-eating_plan.aspx
Bye for now

Every time I speak to somebody these days they know somebody has just been diagnosed with cancer, has just died of cancer or has some sort of disease or chronic illness. It really makes me more determined to make a difference by educating people on the importance of diaphragmatic breathing and by doing this increasing your oxygen right throughout your entire body. I feel very passionate about this.
We try to do the right things by exercising and keeping ourselves fit and healthy and trying to eat better foods…well most of the time anyway but we often forget about our insides and what’s going on with our cells and organs and how it affects us as a whole.
As most people have become chest breathers during their adult’s years, the end result of our poor breathing habits is not only insufficient oxygen to our brain and the other cells of our body, but also insufficient movement in our internal organs and in the fluids upon which our health depends.
You might think…Deep Breathing; can it really do what you say it can do? All I know is that coming from a fitness background, I’m never going to give up my daily runs, my boxing workouts or my TRX classes but diaphragmatic breathing has been a supplement to my daily training routine. All I do is 15-20 minutes most mornings and it makes a huge difference in my life. I have more energy, better focus and have trimmed my mid section and also knowing that I’m doing something for myself to work on from the inside to prolong my life. You too will be amazed at how you will feel.
I think over the next few years more and more people will look for alternatives in their daily routines to make them feel better, look better and live longer…it’s only a matter of time.
Is the way you breathe making you sick, stealing your energy, hampering your productivity or shortening your life?
Here are just some of the benefits of diaphragmatic breathing, the SlimBody4Life way:
The medical and scientific communities are recognizing more and more the importance of getting enough oxygen, here are some extracts from some professionals and what they have said about deep breathing and oxygen:
"Oxygenation through deep breathing boosts the immune system and can rid the body of chronic illnesses." --Dr. Sheldon Hendler, MD, Medical Researcher Cell Oxygenation, Author "The Oxygen Breakthrough"
"Deep diaphragmatic breathing stimulates the cleansing of the lymph system by creating a vacuum effect which pulls the lymph through the bloodstream. This increases the rate of toxic elimination by as much as 15 times the normal rate." --Dr. J.W. Shields, MD, Lymph, lymph glands, and homeostasis. Lymphology, v25, n4, Dec. 1992, p. 147
"Oxygen plays a pivotal role in the proper functioning of the immune system. We can look at oxygen deficiency as the single greatest cause of all diseases." --Stephen Levine, a respected molecular biologist and geneticist, and Dr. Paris M. Kidd, Ph.D., Antioxidant Adaptation
